ARTIST'S STATEMENT Organic & natural forms have been the inspiration of my work for many years. I started my arts career with theatrical costume design and portraiture and later moved away into the patterns & rhythms of nature. My paintings explore the relationship between color, light & form while underneath those painterly manifestations lies the world of the magical & the mystical. My work as an artist is to connect these external & internal worlds. I always work in series & when a series comes to its own conclusion, I move on to the next, already imminent in my thoughts. Natural phenomena have become the center of my painting world. Walks along the seashore of my Eastern Long island home were the incentive for my early "Shinnecock & Mecox" series. Sand patterns formed by winds & receding waves, tidal pools, light reflections on water emerged as blocks of brilliant white and initiated these close-focus paintings. Travels to the American southwest introduced me to sunlight exploding in geometric prisms of dazzling hot color interspersed with mysterious shadows of blues & lavenders, and I was impelled to photograph in black & white to diminish the radiance.("The Canyon Series"). As I biked along a tropical inlet in Florida, I happened upon another astonishing wonder of nature. When I stopped to look, I saw that the trunks of the palm trees were shedding layer upon layer and an enchanted fabric emerged from their core. Twisted strands & woven ribbons of extreme intricacy fired my imagination and the "Sacred Palms" were born. A vacation in Hawaii, where I had longed to go since early childhood, opened my eyes to the ultimate Natural Phenomenon, the volcano, Mother Nature's most amazing display yet. Later, back in New York, I saw on the news that Hawaii's Kilauea had begun to erupt. I became obsessed until I could return, board a helicopter and fly into the flowing hot lava -- an experience beyond my wildest dreams -- so beautiful & awe-inspiring that the danger became irrelevant. My current series, "Dream Fragments" is an adventure of the imagination. Light presences filter through the lense of nature and give a glimpse into another world. And so I invite you to look at what the muse has brought me, and how I have interpreted these visions into paint, collage & canvas. |
